As an orthopedic surgeon who grew up Hispanic, I know that my background is a profound advantage and a deep responsibility. I see the faces of my immigrant grandparents and family in the patients I treat every day, and I remember what it felt like to be the translator in the doctor’s office not only as a child but also as a medical student, a resident, and still now as an attending when I am needed. This is why I believe that to fully serve the Latino community, we must possess a personal understanding of its culture.

Today, while the Latino population surpasses 68 million people in the U.S., the number of Latino orthopedic surgeons remains incredibly small. This means that we, as providers, are in a minority culturally compared to the patients we serve. Studies clearly show that patients experience better outcomes when they can identify with their providers.

This is why I am a member of the American Association of Latino Orthopedic Surgeons (AALOS).

AALOS is my opportunity to connect with orthopedic surgeons across the country who share this privilege and weight of our heritage. It is a vital network that provides mentorship, scholarship, and fellowship, making us all better educators and advocates. By coming together and sharing our commonality, we are actively improving the quality of culturally competent care we provide.

AALOS is my commitment to my patients and my community.
